What is Field Day?
ARRL Field Day is the most popular on-the-air event in amateur radio, held annually on the 4th full weekend of June. It's simultaneously a contest, a public demonstration of amateur radio, and an emergency-preparedness exercise. Stations operate for 24 hours under simulated emergency conditions, using portable equipment and alternative power.
TVDXA has taken part every year, operating Class 3A — three transmitters at once, all on emergency generator power, networked with N1MM Logger+ across phone, CW, and digital modes. From 2016 through 2023 we set up at the Highway 58 VFD Training Facility near Ooltewah; in 2024 we moved to the Tri-Community VFD property on East Brainerd Road in Collegedale. We operate under our club call N4LT, in honor of longtime Field Day enthusiast Dick Wilson (earlier years used KM4EA, and the 30th-anniversary 2019 event used the special-event call N4T).
