Virginia QSO Party 2018

VAQP · March 2018 · K4VIG · Wythe County, VA · Sand Mountain Hunting Club, near Speedwell

This was the fifth year a group from our Tennessee Valley DX Association traveled from the Chattanooga area to Wythe County to operate the VAQP, set up Field Day style at a hunting lodge near Speedwell.

Three stations (K3S, K3, TS-590S) were on the air, manned by five operators. Antennas were a G5RV, an 80M ladder-line dipole, a 40M EDZ, and a 160m inverted-L with one raised radial — the 80/40s fed through tuners for multiband operation, all at 40 to 60 feet between the large trees. Saturday's conditions were poor; even with only three transmitters it was hard to find a band and mode that would support a run of any length, and thunderstorms forced a shutdown Saturday night. Sunday was marginally better. Virginia activity seemed very light compared with past years, and the extended hours weren't especially productive. In spite of all that it was still a lot of fun — good food, good fellowship, and playing radio in the woods. We appreciate everyone who stopped by to give us a QSO.

We operated Multi-Op, Multi-Transmitter, Fixed Station at Low Power under the call K4VIG, with about 19 hours of operating time.
